Crash on my Africa Twin
Hi Guys
Recently my mate and I did a 6,500 Ks trip from Adelaide to the Eastern states to explore the Barrington top moutains and the Old Genn Innes trail then up to Nanago in Qld Then headed directly west to Innaminka in SA.
This video shows how I came off my Africa Twin 160Ks north of Arkaroola.
Pretty isolated place
I was doing 59 Ks/hr when I hit a loose muddy rutt that slid the back end out and catapulted me off the bike.
Hit the ground hard breaking my L/H collar bone in 3 places, badly bruised my left leg and sprained my R/H ankle
We got the AT back up and rode the last 793 ks back to Adelaide, to arrive home safe and sound after an amazing adventure

Lovely tasteful build, it's clear you made the effort to do things right, and the sound is fantastic! I had to pause the vid to go and find some headphones :) UA-cam just recommended this to me, but I see you've got loads of CX build stuff on your channel. I've subscribes, and look forward to watching more! Cheers from Ireland.

I feel your pain Steve. In early May this year crashed my Tiger GTPro between Cameron Corner and Tibooburra. Knocked myself out and later found that I'd fractured my pelvis. I was with a mate and we made it back to the medical centre at Tibooburra with some help from a couple in a four wheel drive. I'm all good now but still waiting on parts to get the bike back on the road. Triumph Australia is very slow!! It's so easy to hit a soft spot on those roads and before you know it over you go! Glad you're ok. Cheers, Ian

    • @Coolhand99au
      @Coolhand99au 2 дні тому

WOW ! Ian glad your Ok fractured pelvis is pretty serious. One thing about a crash like you and I had is, you come off, fly through the air hit the ground and then the momentum makes you roll. Your arms and legs are getting thrown around and you have a helmet on your head. I got a sprained R/H ankle, bruising on the L/H leg and a sore neck and I was only doing 59 Ks at 100 Ks you could do some serious damage The frustrating part for me was, we had already ridden 6,000Ks over some pretty rough dirt roads then to have the back wheel just slide out on a straight road at 59 Ks and get catapulted off the bike DAM !!! Looks like we are both getting our bikes back to their former selves Once we are all repaired we can hit the road again Good luck and keep safe Ian

Thanks Graham ? MCD Your right it does bring home to you how dangerous coming off in an isolated place like that can be. Especially if you where on your own It was an amazing adventure through some challenging beauitful country. Kind of annoying the crash happened on a straight piece of road at 59 ks !! All's good the bike and I will get fixed up and we will hit the trail again

Hello Steve, what a trip, could have been a leg and you would have been stuck. How are you now, is the shoulder healing OK? In the early 40's, a plane crashed into the southern end of the Barrington Tops and I believe that some of the wreckage is still there. Was going to go and look for it in the 60's when I still lived in NSW, never got around to it.

would it not have been less fabrication on the carbs to fabricate a custom connection between the carb and the piston, rather than cut and modify 3-4 components of the carb setup? If you had to do it over again, would that be a shorter path to success?

If you powder coat your parts, you don’t necessarily need a coarse finish. Powder will adhere to the material extremely well no matter polished or not, a long the surface is 100% clean. There is a powder from Clear Vision named Ultra Clear Vision and is transparent. If used, you newer will need to sandblast your aluminium parts again.

Hi Steve, I really like this and thinking about making own. I have few questions for you; how often do you use this? Is the exhaust fan needed? What are the benefits of having it? Where did you get your pump and gun? And do you like them any suggestions on choosing those items? If this turns out well for me I will be using this a lot so would really like components to last awhile. Do not mind spending a bit but would also like to save money if possible. Any suggestions you have would be very helpful thanks.

1st why do you have a cover on the pump, being a submersible i would think that it is not necessary. 2nd i can see that you are a competant welder why didnt you build 2 support trolleys one for each media therefore not having to manually swap media which is awkward and as you get older more strenuous i am 74 and 5 foot 6 ,god plays a nasty trick and allows you to think you can still do what you used to do without penalty plus it would easier on your back and less time consuming thanks for the informative vid

Hi Steve, I didn't get why you had to do that test (my bad understanding English I guess), did you felt a lack of performance? or was something else?

Hi Carlos I had steam coming out of the R/H exhaust That means I had cooling water going into the combustion chamber. Not a good thing. Where could the water be coming from? Really there are only 2 places 1. Water is getting past the cylinder to combustion chamber seal on the head gasket 2. If I had a crack in the head letting water seep into the combustion chamber So now I know I have no cracks in the head I'll get a new head gasket new dowels. I did tap the theads of the head bolts. but I will do them again to make sure the tension of the head bolts will be correct
